Orford / Irford Priory (Nunnery)

Lincs, near Priory Farm, c. 1 mile NW of Binbrook (CLAPHAM)

Priory of St Mary is said to have been founded by Ralph de Aubigny, who seems to have granted the land and church to Newhouse Abbey, whose abbot and canons may have been the actual founders, as at Broadholme.

Sisters are recorded c.  1155-60, and community probably similar to that at Broadholme.

Net income c. 1535:  £13

Escaped suppression in 1536;  surrendered 8 Jul 1539 by the prioress and 7 nuns;  5 still on pension list in 1553, one having married.  (KNOWLES)
