3.  John  Grauncorth

John  *Grauncorth *Gaunorth (H79, FOX), ruled 19 years 39 weeks from *October 1233 to August 1253 (H83, PAGE) *1229 – 1249 (H79) *1251 (M), yet according to Ward he was abbot of Lavendon (Bucks) in 1236.

*C41 and Clark give him as a close associate of Augustine of Lavendon, mentioned in 1233, 1236, 1237.
 
In 1233 Henry III gave Dale Abbey 4 oaks for shingles for the dormitory roof, and in 1235 7 oaks for the same purpose (in full in COX18), and a further 5 also in COX18.
 
1234 Archbishop of Canterbury instructed by Pope to excommunicate people who had taken possession of some Dale Abbey lands and tried to make Dale Abbey pay tithes on them.
1234 Abbot inducted, according to papal mandate, the Prior of Lenton to the church of St Mary, Nottingham, because the pope’s nephew Nicholas had resigned (C41E). 
1234 the King commands Walter de Godeville to see that the abbot and monks are not defrauded out of the mediety of the mill at Fulcrottam, which William de Bugheden gave to them for the good of his soul, who is now dead (COX18)
 
11th September 1235 at Burton-on-Trent, Henry III confirmed a long list of past benefactions to Dale Abbey (C41E).
 
1st January 1236 Dale Abbey granted 40s. per annum to Lichfield for the celebration of masses (C41E).
 
1237 the bailiffs of Richarde de Munfichet in the forests of Chippenham and Melkisham are commanded to give 2 oaks for making beams out of Chippenham, and 2 out of Melkisham, to the abbot of Stanley, to be used in constructing a bell turret by the gift of the King (COX18).  Also 4 oaks for the tower (in full in COX18).
 
2nd February 1238/9 witness a covenant.
1240 2 more oaks from Chippenham (COX18).
 
1241/2 witnesses a quitclaim.

1244 the King writes to the sheriff of Derby to permit the abbot of Dale to cultivate and sow 2 bovates and 30 acres of land in Sandiacre and Hallam which are of the sergeanty which Richard de Sandiacre held of the King in chief (COX18).
