18.  Richard Nottingham

Richard Nottingham ruled 19 years from October 1491 (M) to *1511 (WARD, PAGE) *1510  (H83, M).  During his rule the chancel clerestory was built:  this necessitated the removal of the steeply pitched roof, and substituting a flatter one.

‘A pious father, adorned with sundry flowers of the virtues’ (H83).  He made good provision for his predecessor (details in PAGE, and see below).

(May 1478: mentioned in Visitation Record as Circator (C40C).  1480 mentioned in the Visitation Record as Sub Prior.  1485 mentioned in the Visitation Record as having the vicarage of Heanor, which he retained until 1491 (H83) Aug 1491 when he resigned (C40C).  This is not the same Richard of Nottingham as the one who was vicar of Kirk Hallam from 1442 to 1458 and vicar of Ilkeston from 1458 to 1497 (H83, also C40C where it doesn’t mention Ilkeston).)

28 October 1491 provided very adequately for his aged predecessor:  20 marks per annum, extensive rooms, fuel for heating, candles, chaplain for daily service, food, 8 flagons of best beer per week; food for 2 servants (1 man, 1 boy); pasturing and stabling for two horses;  all home comforts - spoons, salt-cellars, furniture and bedding - to revert to Dale Abbey on his death.  He lived in the Chaddesden Chamber (H83, briefly in M).

1494 Canon Edward Hampton sent to Dureford (Sussex).

16 canons, 2 of which were deacons (PAGE) and 2 novices.

31 May Visitation:  ‘2 canons are found guilty of incontinence and punished.  During the feast of Corpus Christi ‘Alleluia’ is to be used as in Paschal time.  The administration of the abbot is approved and praised’ (M).  Names of canons given (M).

John Bebe confessed to incontinence:  he was sentenced to 40 days heavy punishment and 7 years banishment to Halesowen.

23 September 1495 elected diffinitor (see Abbot 17) (C41).

Bishop Redman gives a good report of the house.  The canons are henceforth to bow and not kneel at the elevation in the Mass.  More names (M).
