The site was granted to *Augustinian canons  (WILLIS, WARD, HOPE) *Premonstratensian (FOX, in error) from Calke  (WILLIS, WARD) by Serlo de Grendon (see Serlo de Grendon)  WARD, FOX, CLARK, H79, C40).

The original complement consisted of a prior plus 5 canons (WILLIS, WARD), including a Nicholas and a Simon who had been companions of William de Grendon in Paris.  Prior Humphrey went to Rome (CLARK) and secured the right to bury and celebrate when the country lies under an interdict (WARD, CLARK), a valuable privilege (WARD).

They built a church (WARD, HOPE) and other offices with costly workmanship.  

They wore black habits (WARD, CLARK).

The colony held the Gomme's Depedale estate, Boyah estate and a small area called *Chasemore (WARD) *Thacthemor, and 4 acres probably in Sandiacre) (SALTMAN).

Albinus, 1st Abbot of Darley (Augustinian) (reigned *1151-1175 (CLARK) *1154-1176 WARD) was a benefactor.

Many nobles were buried here, including the *hermit Peter Cook of Bathley (WARD).
More than 40 knights were buried here plus many others including the *anchorite Peter Cook of Bathley (CLARK).
Many people were buried here and endowed the abbey (C/WC).
