The bulk of the income was derived from the original foundation by the families of William FitzRalph and Serlo de Grendon, and was concentrated in a comparatively small area around the site of the abbey.
In one charter, 14 bovates were granted for the sustenance of 3 canons. (1 bovate is approx. 12 acres). Sustenance doesn't mean the full maintenance of a canon, but rather a chantry endowment for the performance of masses (SALTMAN).
