The church of St Mary was appropriated to Michelham Priory in 1229. Some time after 1260 Bayham abbot claimed that this church was a chapel of his church at Hellingley, and 4 Premonstratensian canons and 4 lay-brothers were instituted. They were driven out by the secular arm in 1280. Disputes followed, and these canons again seized the church in 1287, but they were again removed. Bayham’s claim was upheld in 1296, provided that an annual payment was made to Michelham. (KNOWLES)
