Hornby Priory

Lancs

Founded as priory of St Wilfrid by either Roger de Montgebon III (1172? – 1226) or Adam de Montgebon who occurs 1160-71.  As the house is referred to later as a hospital, it probably began as such after 1160, becoming a priory of canons dependent on Croxton after about 1172.

Roger de Montgebon granted 100 acres in Hornby to the canons there – inquest of 1212.

1381:  5 canons, but later only 3, as in 1536 when it was surrendered;  it was allowed to continue and was suppressed with Croxton in Sep 1538, when it had a prior and 2 canons.

Net income c. 1535:  £76  (KNOWLES)
