The church of St James with appurtenances was granted by Adam fitz Adae to West Dereham Abbey, doubtless at the instance of Hubert Walter, who founded that abbey, while he was dean of York and before he became bishop of Salisbury in 1189.
Church was later served by canons of West Dereham and became a quasi-cell with more than one canon.
