William FitzRalph.
His family tree is given in C40.
He was the son of Ralph FitzGeremund (COX), the father of Matilda de Salicosa Mara (COX, WARD, C40), the brother-in-law of Serlo de Grendon (C40), and the father of Edelina and Avice also (SALTMAN).
He was Sheriff of Nottingham and Derby between 1168 and 1180 and frequently attended the King 1170-80. In *1178-1188 he was Seneschal of Normandy (C40F) *1178-1200 (C/WC).
He bought Stanley village from Nicholas *Child (C40F) *Chylde (of Trowell (CLARK) (Pipe Roll 1178/9 (C/WC)), to give to his daughter (WARD, C40), but
*sold it to Geoffrey de Salicosa Mara for £100 7 years after he married Matilda (C40F).
*This seems to have been a fictional sale in order to put the Abbey on a securer legal footing so that he could bequeath Stanley to the Salicosa Maras (CLARK).
*He obtained from William de Grendon a grant in free alms of the adjoining Depedale and its buildings, together with an annual rent of 6s on condition that the refectory provide bread and beer for the poor and masses be said for William and his family in the chapel of Depedale (C40F).
*He conferred with William de Grendon and co-founded Dale Abbey (WARD) but took no part in the setting up of Dale Abbey because he was a busy and important man (CLARK).
*Gave Stanley Park to Dale Abbey in 1197 (WILLIS, dubious).
He held, along with Amalric de Gasci, the moiety of the manor of Egginton (COX); this passed to Geoffrey de Musters, husband of Avice (COX). Both moieties were conveyed to Dale Abbey by Amalric and Geoffrey and for 100 years the abbot presented to the rectory, the last presentation being in 1344.
He was dead *:by 1195 when his estates were divided among his three daughters at their brother’s death (C40F)
*by early 1200 (CLARK, SALTMAN).
*1200 (C/WC).
He was buried possibly in the tomb at the east end of at Margaret's Chapel (C40).
