There has been a suggestion that the stone used was from Bunter sandstone quarry, Quarry Hill, Stanton;  however an alternative view has it that it was not bunter which was used but some harder rough sandstone alongside (Ilk and District Local History Soc Newsletter Aug 1969, p. 13).
