Tower.

Evidence for its existence:

1) It was usual with cruciform churches.

2) Massive crossing piers.

3) At the suppression, there were 6 bells:  total weight 47 cwt - therefore needed a tower.

4) It was not a stone spire because no stones were found:  they would have been left behind because they would have been a funny shape (WARD).

See Crossing.

*The existing remains or foundations show that a tower over the crossing was built or contemplated from the first (CLAPHAM).
*The tower was not built at the foundation (3 piers re-built c. 1350 when the Tower was built?)  ‘During the 14th century, the piers of the crossing were reinforced, to strengthen the central tower or, possibly, to support a spire (D1990).

‘When cutting a drain across the tower area, many interments were met with, in each case without a coffin’ (H79).
