Wendling Abbey

In Norfolk.

It was founded as the abbey of the Blessed Virgin Mary by William of Wendling, a clerk in holy orders, in or before 1267.  It was a daughter of Langley.

It was one of the smaller abbeys with probably never more than the original 13 canons.

Income in 1291:  under £40.

After the Black Death there were 7 canons in 1377-9.

Between 1475 and 1497:  6 – 7 canons present, including the abbot;  1500: 8 including 2 novices.

Net income c. 1535:  £55.

It was due for suppression in 1528 for Wolsey’s colleges, but continued to 1536-7.  Not long before the dissolution it had 4 canons besides the abbot (KNOWLES).

A few fragments of rubble core including part of the west end of the church remain.  The plan in Norfolk Archaeology v is thought to have inaccurate baying (CLAPHAM).
