Stixwould Priory (Nunnery)

In Lincolnshire

The Priory of St Mary was originally of nuns, Cistercian.  After its suppression in 1536, Benedictine nuns of Stainfield were allowed to occupy these buildings, but the 18 nuns and a sister there in Jan 1537 could not afford the enforced payments and had to surrender.

In July 1537 Henry VIII refounded the priory for Premonstratensian canonesses.  The new prioress was a Benedictine nun of Stainfield, and the rest may have been nuns from Broadholme.

This priory surrendered on the 29th Sep 1539 and the prioress and 14 nuns received pensions;  in 1553 11 were still on the pension list, one of whom had married (KNOWLES).
