Stanton church

There is no record of the gift of Stanton church to the abbey, but it has 12th and 13th century coffin lids, so it was probably a parish church.  ‘No vicarage was ever ordained’, and it is not mentioned in the Papal Taxation of 1291 or the Lichfield registers.  It was completely in the jurisdiction of the abbot and convent, and the canon serving it in the 15th century was called presbiter or capellanus but not vicarius (C/WC).

Source of the rest:  unknown – just in notes

In Lichfield diocese:  1553-1702 vicar
1702-1969 rector
1969-1984 priest-in-charge
1984- rector

Lord Stanhope was the patron till 1969.

In 1702 the great tithes were restored by the church, from when the incumbents have been rectors.  This is recorded in the registers where the tithes were dependent on there being each Sunday one service at Stanton and one at Dale (Gooding notes).
