Swainby Abbey

In North Yorkshire.

It was founded as the abbey of St Mary of Charity by Helewisia daughter of Ranulph de Glanville, justiciar of England, in or before 1187.  It was probably a daughter of Durford, with other canons from Welbeck.

The number of canons soon increased from 13 to over 20, but it’s not clear whether this was before or after the move.

The abbey translated to Coverham between 1196 and 1202  (KNOWLES).
