Swine Priory (Nunnery)

In East Yorkshire.  TA13203582 (magic.defra.gov.uk).

It was founded c. 1150 or 1153 by Robert de Verli and dedicated to the BVM, with 14 nuns and a prioress (SWINE).

Male canons were introduced, who may have been Premonstratensian.  They were removed in 1287 as a result of lax behaviour (SWINE)  A canon of Croxton was made master (KNOWLES).

In 1308 a fire led to a rebuild.

In 1335 it consisted of Cistercian monks under a master, and perhaps a dozen lay-brothers.

It was dissolved in 1539 with 19 Cistercian monks (SWINE).
