6. Lawrence  

Lawrence ruled 16 1/4 years from *1270 (M) *June 1271 (WARD) *1273 (H83, PAGE, C40C) to *1287 (M) *September 1287 (WARD) *1289 (H83, PAGE, C40C).  Name originally Laurence Teuren or Tewren (C41).

He was keen on litigation, which led to his resignation (WARD), although according to Colvin (40) and Hope (83), he resigned of his own free will.
 
Thought to be responsible for the building of the east window (H79), ‘extensive reconstruction of the abbey church which took place during the latter part of the 13th century, together with additions to the claustral buildings and minor alterations to the Dale chapel’ (C41).
 
1274 Grant to the abbot of Dale and his successors free warren in all his demene [sic] lands of Stanley, Ockbrook, Boyhagh, Alderwasley, Kirkhalum, and Grif in the county of Derby, and of Bothelegh, co. Nottingham (COX18).
 
1275 named in a deed in the Chartulary (H83).
 
1276 the burgesses of Derby lodged a complaint against Dale Abbey and the Bishop of Chester [sic] that they had obstructed the course of the River Derwent by dams (C39).  This is the same site in Ockbrook as in 1269,1281 and 1283 (C41E).
 
1278 supervised election at Beauchief (S. Yorks) (C41) with abbots of Welbeck, Newhouse and Newbo, where they accepted Ivo’s resignation and Roger de Foulstowe was elected (C41E).

From 1279 Statute of Mortmain the appropriation of lands by monastic houses required royal licence after payment of fine (C41E).
 
1281 The king challenged Dale Abbey's right to 5 bovates of land in Sandiacre (see Abbot 3. (C41)).  Inquisition quo warranto:  details in C41E;  the abbot was being treated as a feudal tenant.
