1347 lent the king 50s. towards the war in France, to be repaid November *1345 (COX18) *1348 (C41).  The king begged the loan of 4 sacks of wool to be delivered in London 30 Sep 1347 (C41).

1349 The Black Death arrived in Derbyshire.  William was given permission by the Pope to choose his own confessor, as was William de Rempstone (C/WC).  The abbot died of the Black Death (COX79).
 
The double Purbeck marble slab in the middle of the museum, which, in 1878 bore a cross fleury, is thought to cover the graves of this abbot and abbot 13 (H83) (see Tombs).
