19.  John Bebe

John Bebe  ruled from 1510 to 24 October 1538 (H83, PAGE).  There is an element of doubt as to whether he is the same man as a John Stanton mentioned in the Commissioners' "Black Book"'.  Hope thought Stanton was an alias (H83), but if not, John Stanton might have been abbot from *1510 (H83) *confusion as to the date is expressed in C40C, to some time before 1536 (C43).  WHITE and FOX also speak of the confusion between Staunton and Bede [sic].

(1491 Bebe was a novice, when he must have been at least 18 years old.  1493 deacon and subsacristan (H83).  1494 he was found guilty of a major infringement of the. rules (H83),  i.e. fathering a child on Margaret de *Hall (H83) *Halle (C41) (see Premonstratensian Canons), and sentenced to 7 years at Halesowen Abbey;  this was suspended and he was sent to Sulby Abbey instead (H83) in 1495 (C40C, PAGE).  He was returned by 1500 (C41) and became   Cantor at Dale Abbey (H83, PAGE).  In 1505 he supervised the election of Edmund Green to the abbacy of Halesowen (C41).

8 June 1516 The abbot was present at a party and drinking wine in Nottingham with the Prior of Lenton and Mayor Thomas Mellers, when Henry Steeper, mercer,  stabbed the mayor twice in his left arm and side (C43).
